Texas Forensic Science Commission
Megan Rommel currently serves as the DNA Technical Leader and Section Supervisor for the Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Laboratory in Austin, where she is responsible for managing the technical and quality operations of the DNA laboratory. This includes overseeing analyst training, validating new technology and managing QA/QC compliance for a large high throughput laboratory.
Megan obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a concentration in Genetics from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. She obtained a Master of Science in Forensic Science degree with emphases in DNA analysis, Crime Scene Investigation and Digital Forensics from Marshall University, in Huntington, West Virginia.
Megan is privileged to have spent her 13 years of forensic DNA casework experience with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Texas Department of Public Safety. She has performed and directed validations of new methods and technologies, trained serologists and DNA analysts, testified in local, state, federal, and high profile cases, written standard operating procedures, and served as CODIS administrator for both state agencies. She has directly supervised a team for over 6 years, including hiring, coaching, mentoring and developing new analysts. Megan received the Forensic Scientist of the Year award from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in 2012.
She has presented at international and national conferences such as American Academy of Forensic Sciences, Association of Forensic Analysts and Administrators, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Annual CODIS Conference. She is an active ANAB ISO 17025 technical assessor and FBI Quality Assurance Auditor and is a Member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.
