Chief Justice Scott E. Stevens was born and raised in Longview, Texas, and is a sixth-generation Texan. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas Christian University in 1991 and received his J.D. degree from South Texas College of Law in 1994. He also has a L.L.M. degree in Business Transactions from the University of Alabama School of Law.
After completing law school, Chief Justice Stevens practiced law in Longview for 24 years, and represented clients in state and federal courts in Texas, and various federal courts throughout the United States. He has been Board Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Personal Injury Trial Law since 2002.
Chief Justice Stevens's judicial career began on November 6, 2018, when he was elected as a Justice of the 6th Court of Appeals in Texarkana. On November 8, 2022, he was elected as the Chief Justice of the 6th Court of Appeals.
Chief Justice Stevens is a member of the State Bar of Texas, a Senior Life Fellow of the American Board of Trial Advocates, a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, a Judicial Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, and a Charter Member of the Hon. T. John Ward American Inn of Court. He is also a member and Endowment Fund Scholar of the Texas Bar College. He was selected for inclusion in Texas Super Lawyers (a Thomson Reuters service) from 2009 to 2018. Chief Justice Stevens is also AV Rated by LexisNexis Martindale Hubbell.
Chief Justice Stevens is a member of the Council of Chief Justices for State Courts of Appeal, where he serves on the annual conference committee, development committee, and membership committee.
Chief Justice Stevens is married and is the proud parent of two children. He attends the Trinity Episcopal Church. He has served on several boards in Longview. Chief Justice Stevens is a graduate of Leadership Texarkana and a member and Paul Harris Fellow of the Wilbur Smith Rotary in Texarkana, Texas.
